Does Comfort Diminish Creativity?

I’ve been spending a lot of time the past few weeks cleaning up old hard drives and sorting through photos. Don’t let me fool you, this is not in an effort to live a more organized 2019, or a resolution to embrace more minimalistic living; the computer just keeps yelling at me that our storage is full, AND the external hard drives are filling up.. so, sorting through it is. With this new found organization comes some good old fashioned reminiscing and more specifically reminiscing about my old fashion choices.

Glancing through hundreds of old blog photos from the past five years I couldn’t help but feel a little disheartened about how many less style risks I seem to take as of late. It got me wondering if I’ve traded in creativity for comfort. Have I gotten boring with what I wear strictly because I’m just focused on being comfortable? And comfortable in the sense of wearing a handful of the same pieces, my favorite sweaters, my everyday jeans, rotating between two of my go-to walkable shoes; not that I’m wearing sweatpants every where I go I’ve just gotten very comfortable in the same pieces.

After beating myself up for a few days about how I’ve lost my sense of style and creativity, I had dinner with a close friend and we got to talking about the subject. After a long discussion about style evolution, current trends, the media’s effect on image, social media’s effect on our perceptions and our general tastes, I came to the conclusion that it’s not necessarily about being comfortable, it’s more so about being confident. Confident enough in my own sense of myself and style that I feel okay not jumping too far out of the box, I feel okay letting some trends pass me by without taking them for a spin, and I feel more than okay saving some money from not constantly buying something new to wear. I think it’s embracing confidence in myself which I’m sure like most things comes with age, I’ve become more established with who I am and with that comes a way of dressing that suits me and my lifestyle. But once again, all comes down to perception, some may say this outfit is boring, so neutral, but others may enjoy the subtle mix of textures and proportion play. Who’s to say what’s creative eh? I say, do you, be you, be comfortable and confident everyday, life’s to short to be stressing about what you’re wearing am I right?!
