Another Ode to the Blazer.
Every couple of seasons it’s good to take a step back and evaluate the key pieces in your closet. Yes, seasonally we all add and subtract things here and there, but I’m talking about honing in on those timeless staples and making sure you have your basis covered. Just this past Sunday, my mom laughed and told me that every woman should have a great black dress and pearls; I realized in terms of timeless silhouettes I have neither. I jokingly said, ‘oh yes, we all need a little Holly Golightly in our wardrobes.’ Thinking I didn’t actually need those things until solemnly heading to a funeral. The next day I read a Who What Wear article all about the jewelry trends of 2019 and what do you think the front runner was? Pearls. So whether ma and Who What Wear were thinking the same thing or not, it’s all relative and classics are classics, that’s why they’re called classics. So even though things may seem overrated at a certain point remembering their timelessness is a good reason to keep these pieces around.
Bringing me to my point of, ah yes, the blazer. Every year or so I return to an ode to the blazer; you may remember said discussion here, and I remind us all that a classic blazer is a shining star in any closet. Something as easy as a tailored jacket can transform your look and take something as basic as what I’m wearing below and give it an air of put-together-ness. Blazers have been known to add fun juxtaposition to bohemian maxi dresses and prairie styles, to add a refreshed edge to your old band tee, or easily transition you from work to play with a subtle sophistication without having to try too hard. The blazer in your closet can be any color you choose, true black is an excellent option; but for me, right now I’m loving plaids, houndstooths and checked prints for a slight update to a decade old classic. I stumbled upon this Vintage Brooks Brothers beauty on Poshmark last year and it has become a go-to for on the run days. Fantastic for chic, classic looks but I’m also thinking a little print mixing for pre-Spring, ya feel me?
