6 Tips for Poshmarking Baby Clothes.
Before Rowan, our first child, was born, my husband and I had a pretty aligned philosophy on the style of clothes we would want him to wear. At least while it remained solely are choice to pick out his clothes, once he has a say that’s totally up to him. Not only from an aesthetics perspective, Andrew and I were pretty in sync that we would want to do our best to keep Rowan’s closet somewhat sustainable, from supporting small baby clothing manufacturers, focusing on pieces in natural, high quality fabrics, and minimalistic - so building off of lots of neutrals he could mix and match and wear again and again, and of course like mom and dad’s closets, recycled.
Knowing all we had in mind for the types of apparel we were gravitating towards for Rowan, baby clothes aren’t cheap - especially in instances where he may only get a few wears out of things depending on his growth rate. So naturally from my own buying and selling experience, I turned to Poshmark to begin building Rowan’s wardrobe out of as much recycled clothing as possible. There is a lot to sift through on Poshmark so I’m sharing my 6 tips on shopping Poshmark for baby clothes.
Tip 1: Search for Brands you Love - This may seem like an obvious one but if there are brands you already know and love, start with searching for those and see if anything comes up. For me, a lot of the smaller brands I regularly look for don’t heavily flood Poshmark but sometimes you can find things right away or folks will tag other pieces that are a similar style to that brand in the description.
Brands I love and search for: Rylee + Cru, Jamie Kay, Tiny Cottons, Rudy Jude Co, Zara baby, Quincy Mae, Mori, Red Creek Kids (hardly comes up, but I still try)
Tip 2: Be Open to Shopping for Future Seasons - Poshmark of course differs from retail shopping in the aspect that most of the time there is only going to be one available of something and it may not be a ‘wear now’ situation for your baby. Be open to purchasing for future seasons and sizes if you find something you absolutely love. You’ll get the satisfaction of getting the deal, and when the time comes, have a piece you love for your baby it just may mean a little less instant gratification. This sweaters shown above and below I loved so much, bought from two different sellers around the same time before the baby was even born, one at 0-3 mo and one at 3-6 mo; and was so happy when 3-6 months rolled around and we had another one because we put him in the smaller one so much!
Tip 3: Use the Search Filters - Poshmark has pretty in depth filtering options so outside of just running a search on a brand or an article of clothing, be sure to jump into the filters and narrow things down - biggest one being to size. You can even set filters to specification to your size(s) so it’ll eliminate other ones in your searches automatically. You also have ability to filter by condition, price, color, etc so it can really help unmuddy a search that shows up with countless results.
Non-brand searches I use to describe an article of clothing - neutral, organic, organic cotton, knitwear, vintage, currently searching for gauze things for Rowan for summer, you get it.
Tip 4: Like Things as You’re Browsing - With so much scrolling and so many searches, I always like things as I’m browsing through listings and then go back to ‘My Likes’ later and evaluate what I actually may be interested in purchasing. This helps me have a way to organize what I like and operates almost as a shopping cart to decide before you buy.
Pro tip: If you’re up for letting your likes sit for a minute and don’t want/need to purchase immediately about 75% of the time sellers will reach out with an offer to likers within 48 hours - offering you the item at a discounted price and typically discounted shipping.
Tip 5: Look For Closet Discounts - I love purchasing on Poshmark for myself and baby, but one of the biggest hang ups that always gets me is the shipping cost (standard is $7.45). Outside of offers, a lot of sellers apply bundle discounts to their closet, like 10% off 2 or more items, or 15% off 3 or more, etc, and this also combines shipping costs. If you find a piece you like, there is a big possibility that seller may have other pieces that fit your vibe and size range in their closet. Hop into their profile to see what discounts they offer and if you find multiple things add them to a bundle to save even more.
Pro tip: Even if they don’t have a bundle discount offered up front, it’s still a great idea to add items to a bundle if you find multiple pieces in one closet. Most sellers will be very enticed to manually offering you a discount if they see you’ve bundled more than one item as well!
Tip 6: Make an Offer - And lastly, if you’re doing the above chances are a lot of sellers will send you an offer, but if there is something you really love and don’t want to wait, don’t be afraid to just make an offer! What’s the worst that can happen?! They decline! No big deal. Shoot over an offer and get negotiations going, just know that if you initiate an offer and they accept, you are charged automatically and the transaction goes through so there’s no backing out!
